Questions of the Day…
Sometimes, life throws us curve balls and force us to do
some thinking. I’m not going to take a deep dive here, as time is short and it’s
been a crazy couple of days. Suffice to say, this #grownasswoman is running on empty.
When you live with your parents, who are 85 and 87, you count
your blessings for the small victories…surviving a fall, taking a walk on the
driveway, managing medicines without too much difficulty, and staying ahead of
what they might want or need. For me, keeping them healthy and safe is job
number one.
Recently, my parents were given a homework assignment. This
is not something they have to do in one day, but rather something they need to work
on in their free time. I have never been a fan of homework but I do like journaling
(when I have time!) and this assignment has definitely given me food for
thought.
They were given some statements to consider:
· WHAT
DO I WANT TO SAY?
· WHAT
DO I NEED TO SAY?
· WHAT
DO I WANT TO DO?
· WHO
DO I WANT TO SEE?
· WHERE
DO I WANT TO GO?
· THINGS
I WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW…
At first, they scoffed and laughed, but soon, they warmed
up to the idea and with their own notebooks, they take time to list a couple of
things a few days a week.
This assignment is not meant to be sad or morbid, but
rather serve as a checklist for important things to say/do before it’s too
late.
Mom said she wanted to go on a safari…we had to set up some
guidelines. The answers had to be realistic. Dad struggled a little as he is a
man who doesn’t always share like the rest of us, but he has definitely taken
it seriously.
I think the exercise is great. None of us really know what
tomorrow holds so we shouldn’t wait until we are in our 80s to do this
assignment. Get your notebook ready!
Again, I’m not going to get too wordy with this post, as my
brain is on overload tonight. But I hope you will think about one or all of
these statements.
In the meantime…enjoy Derby festivities these next couple
of days! I know Friday & Saturday are going to be nearly perfect weather
days!
