May…a month of
celebrations
Oh May…You are one of the luckiest months! There is so much excitement during May! It starts of with the most exciting two
minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby, and ends with the celebration of our military
heroes. In between, there are First
Communions, Mother’s Day, High School and College Graduations, Weddings, and Pool
Openings! Whew! It’s full and exhausting but so exciting for
so many people…all in one month!
As an employee at a girl’s high school, we take celebrating
high school graduation to an extreme. Yesterday,
was one of several events that are special for the senior girls and their moms
(or special guests). This luncheon is
when the girls are given a medallion from the school. They are asked to wear this at the remaining
events…Baccalaureate and Graduation. The
girls arrive dressed smartly in their cute little rompers, jumpsuits, dresses
and skirts. Moms are decked out
too. We all enjoyed a tasty lunch and
then 174 girls lined up around the perimeter of the room to go on stage and
receive their medallions from moms who are alumnae. The room is quiet, except for the soft music
playing as the Assistant Principal announces the names of each of the
girls. It is a special time.
As I stood in that room, I thought about the day when my
Katie was sitting next to me, preparing for graduation. This ceremony has changed but the hopes and
dreams that we had that day, have not. Graduation from high school is a huge
milestone and one that should be celebrated in style. I am so proud and really impressed with the
success stories of the young women in that room. Mt. Notre Dame has produced a lot of amazing
young women and I look forward to watching these “girls” continue to soar!
Working in a school keeps these memories close and alive for
me. I loved every minute of Katie’s
high school days and I remember each senior event with a smile. It goes so fast…terribly fast and even now,
13 years later, I can still feel the tears sting a bit!
Life has so many milestones, but today, I remember those
high school memories! Ummmmm…You may
know that I am seriously connected to my high school friends…in fact, I just
had happy hour with 15 of them this past weekend. These folks are special to me. I am the geek who looks forward to class reunions like no one
else.
For those of you who have graduations…CONGRATULATIONS to all of
you! Enjoy the ride! For all of you who have had other
celebrations this month…I hope you have enjoyed them all!
This weekend, let’s all enjoy Memorial Weekend! For me, I’ll be with Katie and we will
celebrate her first baby shower. There
will be fun with friends and family in Louisville…cocktails around the pool and
lots of love and laughter.
Oh May…you really are the luckiest month…
