Am I a Barbie Girl?

Well, this afternoon, at 3pm, I was a Barbie girl! Dressed in my pink shirt, I went to the theater, alone, and happily found one of my Ethel friends who sat next to me!

Now, let’s talk about the movie and the hype! I’ve heard and read a lot of good about the movie and honestly, it’s always nice to just see a movie that isn’t sad or violent. So, I knew going in, that it probably had a good message and it would be fun.

I’ve been trying to figure it out, put my brain around it. Not really sure what to say, that’s why I’m getting to this late!

The colors, the music, and the nostalgia of it all was great! I played with Barbies for as long as I can remember, although I’m a year older than that doll! ! I’m fairly certain my first Barbie came when I was in kindergarten or first grade. My Barbie had a helmet kind of hair style. Maybe it was a bouffant hairstyle or Barbie’s recent perm. She did not have silky long hair. She was super skinny and a doll. I didn’t have a Ken doll although my brothers had GI Joe so that’s who her boyfriend was. Again, I didn’t make that big of a deal about it.

At any rate, I did not get a new Barbie every time she got a new “job!” I didn’t get the new doll, I got clothes to change her look. I was happy with that.

In my elementary years, I gotta say that I never really thought about Barbie as a career woman or as an example for what I could be some day. She was a fancy doll with lots of fancy clothes.

Katie had Barbie too. She had a few more than me, but mainly because she had birthday parties when Barbie was the trendy gift. I don’t remember her doing any fantasizing about being an astronaut or the president with her Barbies. However, she did play with them a lot, and they certainly saw their share of wear & tear.

Okay, back to the movie. The opening scenes was a little un-necessary, but my first real laugh came when Barbie took her shoes off and her foot was still on its toes…just like the real doll. Throughout the movie, there were funny scenes and I did enjoy the movie.

I was really trying to focus on the “messages” that I expected to walk out with. It’s true that we want our daughters to realize that they can be anything that they want to be and we don’t want them to depend on a man to be successful. The Barbies in the movie were strong, diverse and a variety of abilities. The Kens in the movie were all handsome and talented. Barbie gives little girls the power to be anything.

Honestly, I’m sure there were deeper messages there but nothing that I wanted to stand up and cheer about. That’s okay. It’s a movie!!

I doubt that young girls would really enjoy it, although there were a few there. The audience was mostly middle aged and older. There were lots of laughs, and I’m glad I went.

I might have to see this one again, but it’s not one that I would push anyone to see! It’s fun and visually I enjoyed it. For me…the nostalgia part was the big draw!

Don’t hesitate to provide me with more insight or give me your opinion overall. If you decide not to go, don’t feel like you are missing a lot! xoxoxoxox

  2. I saw it with my 20-something daughters. That made it all the more fun. I’m not sure that I had a Barbie. Not a big doll child, but my girls did. I wasn’t expecting a big message. To me it poked fun at a lot of societal things. I looked at it as a Toy Story type of experience. Mostly fun with some themes thrown in. I found a lot of parts to be hilarious. But the conversations with my daughters brought more humor. “That is exactly what happened to your Barbie dream house when your brother wanted to play with you.” I am also a Ryan Gosling fan. I agree with you. I think some people will find it very funny, but I also think some won’t like it. I will definitely watch it again when it streams. I know there’s a lot that I missed.
