Weekend Update...
The next part of my Online
Dating Experience...
In the midst of my Zoosk
membership, someone recommended another online dating site to me, Silver Singles. This
is a site dedicated to connecting the over 50 crowd. Although I
wasn't sure I'd have much luck, again, why not? And with a name
like Silver Singles, just maybe...
Fast
forward to my profile...Height, Ethnicity, Religion, Smoking preference,
Education, Language, Description of myself; What I'm looking for in a
relationship? If I had one wish, I would wish for, (to win the
lottery)! What makes me laugh, (online
dating sites!!)? What are my passions, (my
friends!)? What are words my friends use to describe me, (crazy,
funny, loyal, honest, organized)? How do I spend my free time (what free
time)? Where do I feel most at home (anywhere in
my pjs)? What I do not like (coconut and liver)?
What are three things I am thankful for (my family,
my friends, my life)? What are my favorite leisure activities (happy hour,
binge-watching Netflix)? ALL OF THIS is EXHAUSTING!!
It is such a game...trying to find the right things to say without sounding
arrogant or untouchable. Believe me, the profiles (of the men run
the gamut from nothing to the extremely unbelievable.
I
won't bore you with all of the information that I submitted, but suffice to
say, this seemed to be a little more promising. Again, I paid for
one month and again, my bank "dinged" me for suspicious
activity. I gave the okay, and the matches started to come
in. With Silver Singles, you can do a smiley face or an X.
There are categories such as Match, Views, and What If? There
were a lot of decent looking people, but their distance from me was further
than the 50 miles I had requested. Then I started to notice that
there are lots of single men with shaggy beards, motorcycles, and
horses. I'm not sure what that was about, but that seemed to be a
consistent theme. Who knew?
I always enjoy the description of "athletic and
slender" then look at the picture, and wonder when was the last time they
had hit the gym?
The funny (or sad) thing for me is thinking that these men think their pictures are good…making them look like prize winners, when in fact, some of them look like they have been on a deserted island for years. Or maybe they just borrowed their post office mug shot. And can we talk about the infamous "bathroom selfie?" Oh my gosh! Yes, I know that men may not have a lot of mirrors in the house, but can’t you get someone to take a picture of you when you might look nice? They seem to think posing in front of the bathroom mirror will get the best look. Trust me, I am learning a lot about men…a shower curtain says a lot about a personality!!

I had a couple of interesting conversations with "matches" but nothing seemed to stick. I had some crazy messages from men too...Like "Hello Sexy" and "Do you like foot massages?" and "How about some hot **** for dinner?" "If you read your own profile, you'd know why you aren't getting any matches...you’re a conceited b****!" Really? Yep...I quickly learned these are not your daddy's opening lines, that's for sure. Again, I found myself blocking more than I actually connected with. I also stepped out of my comfort zone and would send short messages to some...
When I would send a message, about,
80% of the ones were left unanswered. The other 20% came back as
"I just started chatting with someone so I'd like to give it a shot"
or "NO" or "I don't think we are a match" but at least they
responded. At first, I felt a twinge of rejection, but then, I
realized that my expectations were far greater than the reality.
So, I let it go, so to speak. I still "browse" on the
site, but it's not overly exciting. I plan to let this subscription
expire.
I promise, there is good that has come out of the online experience, but to be honest, after these two site experiences, it was hard to move forward. Next up...Match.com.
Due to privacy rules and concerns that someone may find out I put them on my site, I have edited some things. Just for fun, here are a few samples of the "matches" or the "hearts" I received during that time. Stay tuned for another online/dating update...next Sunday!
